Speaking at the event, Ambassador Cui Tiankai said that in order to understand the story of China's development, one should look at not only the present or the past 70 years, but also the uninterrupted Chinese civilization continuing over 5000 years, because the genes of a civilization determines the country's behavior pattern. One of the major characteristics of the Chinese civilization is "harmony". We pursue peace and harmony, emphasize integration and development, and believe that inclusiveness leads to true greatness. Ambassador Cui sent his appreciation to the Municipal Government of Huangshan, and conveyed special thanks to Huangshan Tourism Development Co., Ltd. and China National Tourist Office in New York.
Kong Xiaohong, Deputy Secretary of Huangshan Municipal Party Committee and Mayor of Huangshan, said that Huangshan is not only an important representation of the beautiful China, but more importantly, it captures the essence of the Chinese culture, is a forerunner in China's tourism, and is joined by the Yangtze River, the Great Wall and the Yellow River to become Symbols of the Chinese people.
The following is the full text of the remarks by Ambassador Cui Tiankai:
Ladies and Gentlemen, dear Friends,
Good morning! On behalf of the diplomats at the Chinese Embassy, I would like to extend a warm welcome to you all to be our guests today.
On this day a year ago, we opened the door of the Embassy and welcomed you to come in and "experience China". Over 8,000 people visited us on that day. The passion of the American people for friendship with China warms our hearts, and also encouraged us to open our doors again this year.
Opening the Embassy to the public brings in more friends for the Embassy, and has deepened Americans' understanding of China. It is also worth mentioning that opening-up has also ensured China's development. Therefore, on this Day of Opening, it is from the perspective of development that we want to share with you China's story.
This is a story that of 70 years. 70 years ago, the People's Republic of China was founded. At that time, China was still poor and weak. Millions were without sufficient food or clothing, decent housing, or access to education. But our country is now developing at a breathtaking speed with high-speed trains, towering skyscrapers, and fast-approaching 5G telecommunication going beyond the wildest dreams of many. But for the Chinese, this is a story about the greatly improved livelihood of our people. Indeed, China's development centers around its people, and it is all about realizing our people's growing aspiration for a better life.
Of course, to understand the development story of China, one should look at not only the present or the past 70 years, but also the uninterrupted Chinese civilization continuing over 5000 years, because the genes of a civilization determines the country's behavior pattern. One of the major characteristics of the Chinese civilization is "harmony". We pursue peace and harmony, emphasize integration and development, and believe that inclusiveness leads to true greatness. Imbued with the cherished traditions of our civilization, we have chosen and will keep to the path of peaceful development, committed to joining hands with all countries in building a community of human beings with a shared future.
Speaking of a story of 70 years, I have to tell another story, a story of 40 years. 40 years ago, China and the US established diplomatic relations which created the crucial external conditions for China's reform and opening-up and its subsequent rapid development. The overall stability of China-US relations over the past four decades has been a blessing to not only our two countries, but the whole world. And the essence of this story of 40 years is amity between the peoples, which lays the foundation for and shapes the future of our relations. Among you are winners of the Sino-Us Friendship Story-Sharing award. Your story also constitutes part of this story of 40 years and has touched and inspired us all.
You come to the Embassy today with passion and friendliness for China and with support for China-US relations. The Embassy has arranged for you to experience and celebrate exhibitions about China's technological advances and our cooperation with the US in this field; exhibitions about our 40-year diplomatic relations and about the Belt and Road Initiative. And there are also more interactive displays of Chinese calligraphy, tea ceremony, martial arts, folk music and dances. These are all gems of the Chinese civilization. Of course, your visit today will culminate with "a bite of China", as we have prepared delicious Chinese food for you. And don't forget that the chancery building, a masterpiece by the renowned Chinese American architect Ieoh Ming Pei, is itself a treasure. Its architecture is a best example of fusion between the East and the West, between Chinese and American cultures. I hope that starting from your visit today, you will continue to experience and explore more about an open, friendly and developing China with your eyes and heart, and join us in nurturing our friendship and mutual understanding in the future.
My thanks go to the municipal government of Huangshan, Huangshan Tourism Development Company, China Intercontinental Communication Center, China National Tourist Office in New York, Air China Office in Washington DC, Representative Office of China Council for the Promotion of International Trade in the US and all our partners.
